Amid worldwide economic turmoil, the price of gold has hit a record high this week, breaking through the US$3,000 per ounce mark. It’s currently up 15 per cent since the start of 2025.

Tony Coleman, Managing Director of New Zealand Gold Merchants, says gold has been accelerating in price since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and that Donald Trump’s second term as President has also helped push up its value.

I had a 18ct gold chain that i had taken to many places to get a price to sell and im very grateful for the help and great honest service that was given and shown to me. Ive been put into a difficult financial position and so i had to seek the best place i could to sell my item. They offered me the best price for my gold chain twice the amount offered by others and i couldnt be more satisfied than i am right now. I cant remember the gentlemans name but thank you and a big thank you to Yvonne aswell who served my partner on my behalf. This place is fair and really make a difference in some people's lives. I will highly recommend this place.

I have been involved in the precious metal industry as a supplier for over 30 years.

My involvement with NZGM now spans well over 20 years when it was known formally as ABT Refining.

I first used ABT to refine my scrap material, then later as a supplier of stock material.

Latterly, I have been sourcing all my precious metal requirements from NZGM.

They provide my material when they say they will, the packaging is perfect and exactly as I require.

Dealing with this company has been so easy, and my relationship with Tony has developed to the point that he is no longer just my precious metal supplier, but he is now a trusted friend.

The products that they supply, are excellent in quality, and price, from my experience I cannot see that you will get a better purchase, and a more knowledgeable and trustworthy precious metal supplier anywhere else.

Buying and selling gold can be an incredibly daunting process. Not being experienced I had an incredibly bumpy ride initially. I found that many of the gold brokers in Auckland were unorganised, would not provide indicative pricing over the phone and when they did commit, their prices were all over the place and I felt as though I was being taken advantage of. Fee structures and what they willing to offer were very subjective with all sorts of excuses on why they were offering way lower than other companies for 9999 bullion. With my spirits low and on a downturn in the gold price and needing funds I tried NZ Gold Merchants. John, Yvonne and the team at NZGM were from the onset friendly, professional, clear and thorough. They explained how their fee structure worked and the price they offered was in one particular case 12% more than one of their competitors. On my way to sell the price had dipped slightly and even though I was due to receive less funds they kindly honoured the rate provided earlier which they don't normally do. Yvonne was fantastic and John an incredibly nice man who took the time to introduce himself to me and put me at ease. I would honestly look no further than NZGM for buying and selling precious metals...you'd be wasting your time. Hopefully this review will spare some of you all of the stress and anxiety I experienced in my brief foray into the gold market.

I’ve made multiple purchases from them because after making the first of these purchases, I felt there was no need to look around at other merchants. Their service was great, very friendly and engaging. Highly recommend.

Was looking through the reviews and yes John's attitude in the way he treats customers if not seeing $$ is a problem. Have had two bad experiences with him, once on the phone and once in person, everyone else there is great though, very nice and friendly when dealing with the ladies. It is just a shame that John leaves a bad taste in peoples mouth some times.

All badly milk spotting, edges, Reeding,
Dull reverse, obverse, milking.
John Hunt refused replacement.
John email me it would be prudent to purchase in Dunedin my city.

Our experience with gold dealing in person was so far not a positive one. However, this business made the difference. John has made us welcome, was patient, answered all of our questions in a jovial, yet very professional manner. We were impressed with the clean, tidy and welcoming premise as well, compared to two other gold dealers we saw.
The dealing process was extremely smooth and very customer friendly, all possible on the same day. Will recommend to anyone wanting to deal with gold or silver.
It also shows that this has been an efficiently run family business for many years.
